About City

Frankfurt is a metropolis and the fifth-largest city in Germany. The city is at the centre of the larger Frankfurt Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region. Frankfurt is home to influential educational institutions, including the Goethe University, the UAS, the FUMPA, and graduate schools like the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management. Its renowned cultural venues include the concert hall Alte Oper, Europe's largest English Theatre and many museums. Today, Frankfurt am Main is an important international financial centre and an important industrial, service and exhibition centre. The airport is one of the largest in the world, the main railway station is a central railway junction and the Frankfurter Kreuz is the most frequented road junction in Germany. It has more than 30 museums. Frankfurt is on the Main river. The city's name means ford of the Franks - a ford is a place in a river where it is so shallow that you can walk through it, and the Franks were a Germanic people which existed in the first millennium. Frankfurt is a very international city. Every third inhabitant is not German. Most immigrants come from south-eastern Europe, Turkey and North Africa, but there are people from almost every country living in Frankfurt. There are also many international business companies here, and the big airport links Frankfurt with many countries in the world. Many banks are based in Frankfurt, and the city has some of the tallest buildings in Europe.
